Thursday December 15, 2011 - Jemez Mountains - Valles Caldera National Preserve & East Fork Trail Head.

My daughter was here and we drove over to the Jemez because she wanted to see the damage cause by the fire in July. It really does not look as bad with all the snow, guess it camouflages a lot of the burned area. We stopped at the first observation area and took some pictures, she said she wanted to see an Elk. We had not driven 100 feet over the little hill and there was this hugh herd.

There was a large herd of Elk that we had spotted from the road, the Valles headquarters road was open we entered and drove down to the headquarters buildings. On the way we got within about 50 - 100 feet of the Elk. It was just great. We then drove over to East Fork Trail Head, it's just across the road from where the fire started in July.

On the way back to Los Alamos the elk herd was still there, but we got another surprise another elk herd farther away from the first herd and deeper into the Preserve. I'm guessing that there were about 500 elk between the two herds.

It was such a thrilling outing and the elk and mountains were beautiful.

The last 10 or 11 after the picture of Judy, my daughter, the  elk pictures are not the same herd as the ones at the beginning. The two photos after my daughter are of the East Fork Trail Head.
